[ARCHIVED] Inaugural Bike vs. Bus vs. Car Race to Celebrate Earth Day

WHO: Greenlink and Bike Walk Greenville

WHAT: Inaugural Bike vs Bus vs Car Race

WHEN: Friday, April 21 - Approximately 8:05 a.m.

WHERE: Walgreens - 2323 East North Street

WHY: A bicyclist, a Greenlink bus rider and a motorist will compete to see who has the shortest morning commute to Greenville City Hall at 206 South Main Street. This friendly competition is a celebration of Earth Day and part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness about alternative transportation options in Greenville. The contestants are:

Bicyclist – Tim Hibbard: Tim is the CEO of EnGraph Software and a long-time Greenville bike commuter. Tim joined Bike Walk Greenville as a board member in 2016 and works specifically to identify and advocate for improved access for biking and walking in Greenville for all road users.

Bus Rider – Logan Brown: Logan joined GVLtoday as a content producer and will help support the voices behind the daily newsletter and social outreach. He moved to Greenville in February 2014 after graduating from the University of Mississippi in 2013 with a degree in marketing and management.

Motorist – Mike Renner: Mike is a professional driving instructor with the BMW Performance Center. Mike has competed on track, done film and photo shoots and taught athletes, government officials and entertainers the finer points of piloting vehicles.

All of the contestants will depart from Walgreens and Logan boarding Greenlink’s Route 12 bus will serve as the race’s “starting flag.” The bus will be in service, meaning that it must stop and allow any passengers on or off as normal. Tim can choose his route to City Hall, but he must be dressed for work (no spandex) and obey all traffic laws. Mike can also choose his route to City Hall, but he must obey all traffic laws.

They are expected to arrive at City Hall around 8:20 a.m. and the following rules will apply to the finish:

  • Tim must secure his bike to the bike rack in front of City Hall and walk to the front door
  • Logan must get off the bus at the Greenlink Transit Center and walk to the front door of City Hall
  • Mike must park in the Poinsett Garage and walk to the front door of City Hall

Mari Steinbach, the City’s Parks & Recreation Department director, will hold the finish line in front of City Hall and declare the winner.
