GTA Wins $11M Grant for New Maintenance Facility

GTA was awarded $11 million in grant funding last Tuesday from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the construction of a new maintenance facility. The grant was through the FTA’s 5339(b) Bus & Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program, which is specifically restricted to capital purchases of buses or bus facilities. The $11 million grant is being matched by $2.75 million from the City of Greenville. Additionally, GTA will use proceeds from the sale of its existing maintenance facility (located at 154 Augusta Street) toward the relocation and construction of a new facility. 

Both the Comprehensive Operations Analysis and the Transit Development Plan outline the need for a new maintenance facility as a prerequisite to making further operational improvements. The existing facility on Augusta Street only has room to work on two buses at a time, has a maximum capacity of less than 30 bus parking spaces, and only has 38 employee parking spaces. If Greenlink extends hours, increases service frequency, or adds new routes, it will need space to park both buses and employees, and will need additional maintenance bays to service a larger fleet.

October is “Try Transit Month” and Greenlink has a series of events planned to celebrate. Try Transit Month is part of an ongoing initiative to educate Greenville County residents about the economic and environmental benefits of public transit and encourage citizens who don't typically use public transportation to ride Greenlink.

Jasmin Curtis

New Greenlink Team Member

Meet Jasmin Curtis, Greenlink’s new Safety & Training Manager. Jasmin is responsible for training bus drivers, handling all accident and customer complaint investigations, and ensuring Greenlink continues to provide safe transportation for all customers.
 
Jasmin began her career in public transportation while working toward her master’s degree in Japanese language and literature at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While riding a bus to class one day, she noticed a job posting that read: “Would you like to drive a bus?” When Jasmin thought to herself, “Yes, I would,” her journey began. After six years with UMass Transit Services, she moved to New Hampshire, where she became the Safety & Training Officer at COAST, a non-profit transit agency operating in the Seacoast area. With a passion for learning and new experiences, Jasmin enjoys traveling and has spent time in Japan, Ireland, Canada, and Jamaica. She hopes to add Scotland to the list next year. While Jasmin still retains her love of the Japanese language and culture, she has successfully combined her passion for teaching with her love of public transportation to create an unexpected and rewarding career.

Brookfield/Mauldin Workforce Survey

Do you work in the Brookfield/Mauldin area? If so, please complete a survey about barriers to employment.
 
Area organizations formed the Workforce Data Collaborative (WDC) in April of 2018 to conduct the research critical to advancing Greenville’s economic development. The WDC identified four major barriers to employment and career progression, including transportation, child care, affordable housing, and criminal records. The Brookfield/Mauldin survey focuses on each of these key areas. The survey will be available until October 5 and results will be shared with business leaders and policymakers to inform solutions.

New Bus Ticket Technology

This fall, Greenlink will launch TouchPass, an electronic ticketing platform that provides customers the option to buy bus tickets on their smartphone and store value on a reloadable smartcard. Greenlink hopes that the new option for fare payment will speed up the boarding process and eliminate the burden of needing cash or coins.
 
Before going live with the full launch, Greenlink is seeking a limited number of testers to use the TouchPass system and provide feedback. Download an application to be a tester
 
Return the completed application to the Dispatch Booth inside the Greenlink Transit Center to get your name added to the list. When the testing period is ready to begin, Greenlink will reach out to get you registered with TouchPass.
